Chapter 01 does not have to be a perfect story. It is the page where you capture how things feel right now: who was there, what you thought before you knew what you thought, and one detail you are afraid of forgetting. YearChapter does not ask for a summary of the birth, but for the moment only you saw.

When you open it for the first time, everything can seem equally important. That is normal. You do not have to tell everything at once. YearChapter works month by month. Chapter 01 is simply the start of what happened in that first stretch of time, through your eyes.

Why the first page feels heaviest

A blank page feels like too much choice. You think you already need to see the whole year, while you are still finding your footing. On top of that comes the feeling that you are late. Three days, three weeks, three months: it matters less to the book than you think.

What helps: do not treat chapter 01 as the prologue of a novel, but as a letter to later. Later does not need to know whether everything was tidy. Later needs to know how you lived it, rough and honest.

Three prompts that always work

If you do not know where to begin, choose one of these three. One prompt is enough for your first entry.

  • The detail: What looked different from what you expected? Not the birth as a whole, but one image. The light in the room. The towel on the chair. The way someone said your name.
  • The voice: What did someone say that you do not want to forget? Partner, grandma, midwife, friend. One sentence is enough. Sometimes that is the only reason you still know how that day sounded later.
  • How it felt: Where was your body, where was your head? Warm, heavy, light, empty, full. Describe the feeling, not the photo.

What you do not have to write

You do not need a chronological birth story unless you want one. You do not need polished sentences. Rough ones are enough. And you do not need to compare yourself with other parents. YearChapter is private. Nobody is grading you.

Start with today. Do not work backwards to the first day if that feels too heavy. Your first entry can literally be: I start here. The book grows with you. Chapter 01 does not have to be January if you start in March.

What you write now about how it feels to begin is valuable in itself. In a year your child will not only want to know how the first week was, but also how you looked at everything that came after.
